The Town of Shallotte is centrally located to all the Brunswick County beaches with easy access off US Highway 17 between the historic port of Wilmington, N.C. and Myrtle Beach, S.C. Even though this town has experienced growth over the years, the small town leisurely charm has not been lost! Major airports are easily accessible both north and south. Holden Beach is largest of the Brunswick Islands. It will capture your heart as you cross the bridge and set your sights on the gorgeous ocean view! A popular must see event held every October is called the “Festival by the Sea” which is sponsored by Greater Holden Beach Merchants Association. Eleven miles of white sandy beaches, sea shell hunts, boating, fishing, sea turtle sanctuaries and complete relaxation is definitely a daily experience had by all who visit this treasure. Ocean Isle Beach is one of the unique southernmost of the Brunswick Islands which is accessible from the mainland by a high-rise, fixed, concrete bridge. In this subtropical paradise you can enjoy endless recreational activities such as golfing, fishing, clamming, shelling, sailing or just enjoy sinking your feet into the pristine sandy beach on a leisurely stroll. Sunset Beach is the smallest of the Brunswick Islands! You know when you cross the only one lane floating bridge still in operation today that you have found the diamond in the rough! As of February 2008, the NC Department of Transportation started construction to replace the old bridge with a modern, 65' high arc bridge that will eliminate the need for a bridge keeper, and will provide for a continual flow of vehicle traffic on and off the island, and water traffic on the Intracoastal Waterway. When you have reached the three miles of unspoiled coast and settle down on the snow-white beaches all your prior worries will be washed away by the sounds of the ocean and the privacy that this beach provides. When the sun sets at dusk, you will find out why this island is called Sunset Beach. The spectacular display of daily sunsets with an array of vivid colors over the ocean will just literally take your breath away! There are also excellent restaurants, shops, tennis, and golf. A perfect getaway for a family or couples who enjoy the outdoors! The historic town of Southport is located just below Wilmington and the mouth of the Cape Fear River the views of the ocean are breathtaking. This small town has a lot to offer with antique shops for the collector at heart, beautiful homes and well manicured waterfront parks. Bald Head Island is accessible by private passenger ferry from the Indigo Plantation Marina in Southport. The first things you will see as you approach the island are the quiet unspoiled beaches and the most famous landmark on the island is Old Baldy which is the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina. Old Baldy was built in 1817 and retired from service in 1935. It has been restored and is open to the public for tours. One of the unique things you will discover on the island is the transportation is limited to walking, bicycles and motorized golf carts. The Town of Oak Island considered the largest town in the county was formed in 1999, when the towns of Long Beach and Yaupon Beach were consolidated. Caswell Beach is the home of the Oak Island Lighthouse which replaced Cape Fear Lighthouse in 1958. Oak Island is also home to the highest fishing pier in North Carolina! The Town of Calabash is well known as the “Seafood Capital of the World”. The Town is famous for its “Calabash Seafood” which is a type of flavoring that is unique and originated here. The main shopping attraction is Callahan’s of Calabash which has the most comprehensive collection of nautical gifts found anywhere.
